Get To The Chorus In Thirty Seconds… Or Else.

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

For all those looking to be a songwriter in today’s music industry, there are a few things you should consider:

1. The song shouldn’t be to far over the three minute marker.

2. Have a very defined form to your song

3. Make sure all the musicians playing your songs are doing it effortlessley and perfectly.

3. Get to the chorus in thirty seconds.

Almost all the most popular songs today get to the hook very quickly. Some songs, especially rap, are just one big hook. I’ve been in “important” music execs offices, had them listen to my music and have literally seen them listen to a song of mine and check their watch to see where the chorus landed. The best is when they ask where the chorus was.

I have always been guilty of not wanting to write the typical pop songs. I’ve always had great choruses that went too long or took too long to get too. I’ve had great “middle 8″ parts that were musically amazing but always made execs scratch their head. My advice: keep it simple.

As an artist, you want to develop. So on that note, learn how to write a pop song and compare that style of writing to whatever comes natural to you. You might find a great fusion that makes your music unstoppable or realize that what you did before never made sense.
