Sibilance: Lots Of Ch’s and S’s

Live Studio Recordings, Music Performance, GET RID of SibilanceLook, I was the guitarist that was a plug-in-and-play guy and I disliked gear-head talk. A Gear-Head or “Gear-Freak” is someone that, first of all, refers to musical equipment in stores as “gear”. That alone still drives me nuts, but one who is fond of their tone or sound usually is a gear-head. They are in a constant search for audio devices that will make their instrument sound great. It’s perfectly fine to be one, it’s your prerogative … but it just goes up my ass sideways sometimes.

Anyway, in the past five years I have done a lot of production work and have had a lot of time to listen to guitar sounds and, more importantly, listen to good mixes and bad ones. My ear realizes now the difference between good “gear” and “bad gear”. In other words: I am no longer a plug-in-and-play guy but no gear-head. I just have to utilize as much as I to get the job done.
One of the biggest mysteries of recording (way back in the dark ages of recording for me) was all the harsh sounding S’s also known as Sibilance. Pop filters were the quick and easy answer to curing this common problem along with a good deesser or EQ. But what about live? The perrenial sound guy really doean’t care that much
I tried out the Senheisser Cardioid e840 and that was much better at filtering out sibilance than an Shure SM 58… your normal live mic.
